Learning to say No

No, no, no! We laugh at the two-year-old denying everything asked and offered even if it's ice cream and a trip to the park. Eventually those noes morph into why. As we grow, we become more compliant offering our yeses to please others. People pleasing is exhausting if one goes overboard with consent. I was about forty when I finally learned to say no when I wasn't interested. Two organizations caused me burnout because what I gave was never enough, so I quit cold turkey. What a relief! Some guilt followed yet it was a path I needed to take. Both were at different times in my life - youngish and oldish.
Oprah says forty was her year when she learned the power of no and not feeling guilty about it any longer. Those craving people pleasers aim to guilt trip. Time doesn't allow us to help everything and everybody, so choose those dear to your heart.
Our time is limited and we need time to enjoy and take care of ourselves too. I'm taking the lead from the song of one of my favorite singers "It's my life ---- I ain't gonna live forever".
