Follow your own path

"You are a terrific salesman". I'm sure my coworkers tire of hearing this proclamation each time the owner of a prominent car dealership steps into the store. My response - I am just sharing what I know. That's it! I think I am a shoe in if I want another job.
Another longtime customer recently realizes I am not just a hired hand off the street but am part of the core.
I really don't have a title or a job description though I might sum it up as:
1. Greeter, trying to make all who enter feel welcome.
2. Hospitality Hostess. I have snacks, coffee, water, oh you need a chair, right this way. This guy's wait may be long. "How about a coke?" No beer 'til after hours.
3. Product placement - I can find everything for staff and customers alike.
4. #1 Eaves Dropper. My personal favorite, though I haven't figured out how to place this on a resume, it has been extremely valuable in many situations.
5. Customer Therapist - I am a good listener. "Sorry I am sharing all this." "I can't believe I told you this." I guess I have a face that says, "You are safe to share with me".
6. Concierge: local restaurant suggestions, flower ideas for your wedding, paint color choices, finding your doctor's office down the street. All comes into play in my non-describable job.
7. Not related to bike store but an artist and mini story writer (my own therapy).
Our jobs may defy descriptions and may differ from the typical 9 to 5 of days gone by, but they are important and legitimate. Don't let other's beliefs let you question your route. Differences and creativity are needed to help the world and those in it. Even if not today, your contributions will be appreciated and realized at some point.
