My favorite time of year

As I open my eyes, I see daylight has come. Looking out the window, I see the white covering the trees. I am guessing it is a wet snow covering the thick spruce branches as it has been raining all night and the temps have chilled since last week's sunny seventy-five-degree days. It is Michigan. We expect these crazy weather changes even though many of us don't like them. Jeff threatens to move each day. As I continue to wake, I realize my mistake. I am not seeing wet snow on the spruces, but the flowers on the neighbors Bradford Pear. As much as I love the warm weather, this extended cold spell allows me to enjoy the flowering white trees for weeks, not days, which is a luxury cut short when our temperatures climb. All winter I anticipate the progressive blooms throughout the spring, making this my favorite time of year. How excited I am to spot a freckle violet a quarter mile due east of our house as we return from a walk. As I have never seen one at a local nursery, I imagine this tiny plant blooming in the grass started as a seed in my yard. How amazing is that. The original freckle violet coming from Marseilles, Illinois which I bring home from my grandma's years ago. I savor the weekly changes of blooms, enjoying their longevity this year as I don a winter coat daily. A few snips of hyacinths from the yard and I have a delightful scent bringing joy to my week.
