Ashley River Sunrise Surprise

Who doesn’t love superman ice cream? Well, me for one. The colors are intriguing though a little far-fetched for a food item. Long ago, we established I was a bit finicky in the food department and pastel colors are not part of my regimen. Once, while making milkshakes for the kids, one chose superman ice cream as his flavor. The putrid colored mixture looking like the gray of the water in the painting - the scientific aspect of mixing red, yellow and blue. Our first morning in Charleston, what a surprise, I woke up to a most delightful, colorful morning on the river imaginable, reminding me of the multi colored treat. So many clouds with multiple areas of sun peeking through, glowing on the water. How would I portray it on paper? I wanted to go larger than usual yet a 6” square was the largest paper size I had brought with me. Every trip I go on, even for two days, has me preparing for every kind of weather and grossly overpacked. Many unused items return home each time. When the kids were little my brother in law asked if I had a beer in my purse as I had been able to produce any necessary item anyone, six kids included, needed out of the large bag. This time I vowed would be different, and I would pack lightly. Half of the backseat was empty, a testament to my vow. Though less than a week into the trip, I was invited to paint with a Charleston friend outside in the early morning and was sorry I hadn’t brought my wool sweater. Next year, I will re-evaluate my necessities and accept who I am. Always prepared…probably not a bad trait.
